Target group

Applications are invited from high-achieving MA and PhD students from fields including, but not limited to history, cultural or social anthropology, environmental studies, gender studies, literature, science and technology studies, sociology,and urban studies. While the summer school will have a distinct interdisciplinary and trans-epochal character, potential participants should demonstrate historical awareness and general interest in history. Undergraduates without a university degree will not be considered.


The course is primarily aimed at graduate students (PhD students as well as advanced MA students). Students will be expected to prepare a paper (c.a. 2000-2500 words) to submit upon admission, to be circulated in advance and to be presented and discussed in groups with other students and faculty.

Language requirement

The language of instruction is English, thus all applicants have to demonstrate a strong command of spoken and written English to be able to participate actively in discussions at seminars and workshops. Some of the shortlisted applicants may be contacted for a telephone interview.
