Course objectives
"History and Theory of Art after the Cultural Turn" will examine the status of art historical knowledge in relation to the recent theoretical developments in other disciplines in the humanities. It will explore the new critical methodologies of art historical interpretation and will discuss the implications of gender studies, postcolonial criticism, and museum studies for the enrichment of college and university teaching.

The course will consider the theoretical framework of the emerging field of Visual Culture/Visual Studies in relation to traditional Art History. Interdisciplinary in its approach, the course will answer the question: What is the role of cultural studies for art historians today? It will address the issue of what constitutes the cultural turn in art historical analysis.

This course will take on international and comparative perspective. It aims at the abridging the gap between college/university faculty and professionals working in various branches of humanities across the Atlantic who will find a forum for the exchange of ideas and co-operative projects related to the new arts and humanities curriculum.

Course level, target audience
This course is designed for participants with prior knowledge of the history of art. Preference will be given to faculty members of institutions of higher learning and researchers with professional experience in art history and theory, art education, art criticism, aesthetics, philosophy, museum studies, and cultural studies.

The course will offer an advanced analysis of contemporary theories, research and teaching methodologies.
