In the context of diversification of higher education systems and their sustainability, quality assurance, quality enhancement and the evaluation of university teaching and learning have been on the higher education policy agendas for the past twenty or so years. With the aim to promote institutional quality cultures, the policy actors encourage higher education institutions to participate in international and national-level policy discussions on internal and external quality assurance systems, and support universities to develop internal quality assurance and enhancement mechanisms. The quality of university education is also considered to be one of the most important indicators of the development of any given national higher education system.

This course intends to help universities develop their own internal quality assurance and enhancement processes – including institutional self-studies, preparations for accreditations, program-reviews, faculty and course evaluations, evaluation of teaching and learning, quality of management, and student services- and coordinate their efforts to ensure that the outcomes and processes of university teaching (including face-to-face, online and blended teaching) meet local and international standards simultaneously.

The course builds on the program offered within SUN 2021 and adds an additional focus on quality assurance in institutions outside the US and the European Higher Education Area.

The course will discuss the challenges of and best practices in fulfilling the many purposes of quality assurance at the university level, such as accountability, efficiency, control, evaluation, accreditation, measurement, and quality improvement.

Course format

Total of 24 academic hours.
The course will take place over five weekdays and will be structured daily along two parts. Morning sessions will consist of direct engagement with instructors and participants, through presentations and group discussions spread over approximately three hours. During the afternoon hours, participants will work in small groups on course assignments and/or have individual consultations with course instructors.

"The course was really useful for me because it provided me with the knowledge necessary for quality assurance in university education. Moreover, I had an opportunity to learn from my colleagues how they are working for quality education in their own universities."

"The choice of topics was and their presentation was really well done. The course has improved my orientation when it comes to quality concerns in higher education. Following the course, I feel that I have a more qualified and »peer-checked« perspective on quality-related matters at my own work and that I can thus contribute to any such discussions more confidently."

Target audience: university leaders and managers, faculty, students involved in university governance, and institutional evaluations or self-studies.
